As the CEO of the world's most valuable brand, Jobs pulled in a comically low annual salary of just $1. While the gesture isn't unheard of in the corporate world — Google's Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and Eric Schmidt all pocketed the same 100 penny salary annually — Jobs has kept his salary at $1 since 1997, the year he became Apple's lead executive. Of his salary, Jobs joked in 2007: "I get 50 cents a year for showing up, and the other 50 cents is based on my performance."

In early 2011, Jobs owned 5.5 million shares of Apple. After his death, Apple shares were valued at $377.64 — a roughly 43-fold growth in valuation over the last 10 years that shows no signs of slowing down.

He may only have taken in a single dollar per year, but Jobs leaves behind a vast fortune. The largest chunk of that wealth is the roughly $7 billion from the sale of Pixar to Disney in 2006. In 2011, with an estimated net worth of $8.3 billion, he was the 110th richest person in the world, according to Forbes. If Jobs hadn't sold his shares upon leaving Apple in 1985 (before returning to the company in 1996), he would be the world's fifth richest individual.

While there's no word yet on plans for his estate, Jobs leaves behind three children from his marriage to Laurene Jobs (Reed, Erin, and Eve), as well as his first daughter, Lisa Brennan-Jobs.

Kindle Versus iPad

Kindle has become one hot brand in Amazon! Amazon has unveiled a touchscreen tablet com-puter in an attempt to pull the rug from beneath Apple and its iPad. The Kindle Fire, which has many similar functions, will be sold in the U.S. for $199 (£128), less than half the price of the cheapest iPad available.

The low cost stunned technology industry watchers, who suggested that Apple and other tablet manufacturers would have to cut their prices. Users will be able to access more than 18million movies, television programmes, songs, apps, games, books and magazines via the Amazon website.

The device has a seven-inch screen, compared with the iPad 2’s 9.7-inch display. And unlike the iPad, it will not have a camera or be able to make video calls.

Unveiling the tablet in New York, Amazon’s chief executive, Jeff Bezos, said: ‘Kindle Fire brings together all of the things we’ve been working on at Amazon for over 15 years into a single, fully-integrated service for customers.

‘These are premium products at non-premium prices. We are going to sell millions of these.’

The Kindle Fire will be available in the U.S. from November 15.

Although no date has been set for it to go on sale here, Britain will be getting the latest version of the basic Kindle, which is thinner and lighter than existing eReaders. It will cost £89 – but even this is a mark-up of almost 80 per cent compared to the U.S. There, the new version will cost $79 – about £50.

A company spokesman defended the pricing, saying that the new basic Kindle was the ‘most affordable’ ever. She added: ‘Operating costs differ by country, but as with all products on Amazon, we work hard to offer customers the lowest possible prices.’

But Professor Ajay Bhalla, a technology expert from Cass Business School in London, said: ‘Amazon has not got the pricing right. Consumers are smart and there is plenty of choice in this market.’ He doubted the Kindle Fire would pose a meaningful challenge to the iPad because of the absence of a camera.

Jobs at Apple: Master inventor, master marketer

Steve Jobs started Apple Computer with a high school friend in a Silicon Valley garage in 1976, was forced out a decade later, then returned to rescue the company. During his second stint, Apple grew into the most valuable technology company in the world.

Windows 7 Will Consume Less Disk Space than Vista

Microsoft promises to optimize the amount of disk space that Windows 7 will consume in comparison to Windows Vista. Essentially, the Redmond company is laboring to decrease the installation footprint of the operating system with the next iteration of the Windows client. While the software giant failed to indicate just how much occupied disk space it was going to shave off in Windows 7, it did inform that it was looking to have Windows Vista beat in this aspect.

"As we develop Windows 7 it’s likely that the system footprint will be smaller than Windows Vista with the engineering efforts across the team which should allow for greater flexibility in system designs by PC manufacturers. We will do so with more attention to defaults, more control available to OEMs, end-users and IT pros, and will do so without compromising the reliability and robustness of Windows overall," revealed Michael Beck, a program manager in the core OS deployment feature team.

According to Steven Sinofsky, senior vice president, Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group, the total amount of physical disk space used by Windows 7 needs to go down in order for the platform to be accommodated on SSDs. The introduction of solid-state storage into mainstream drastically limits the space available to the end user and ultimately to Windows itself. Microsoft aims to have machines with 16GB SSDs ship with Windows 7, and, given the current footprint of the operating system, it will be quite a challenge.

At this point in time, a clean installation of Windows 7 pre-Beta Build 6801 Milestone 3 takes over 6 GB of disk space. Vista manages to take hostage a similar portion of the hard disk, and in this context Microsoft has quite a lot of work to do to reduce the space occupied by Windows 7.

A new open source project allows computer users to add surreptitious location tracking to their systems. Windows, Mac and Linux versions are available.

Adeona, from researchers at the University of Washington and the University of California, San Diego, anonymously sends data to servers on a free storage system called OpenDHT. The data, which is encrypted, includes IP addresses, information about neighboring routers, and so forth. If your notebook ever gets stolen you can log into the system from another computer, access the data and notify authorities with it. Working with ISPs they should be able to locate it. The Mac version also uses a freeware program called isightcapture to take a picture of whoever is using the system.

Commercial versions of such products, such as CompuTrace's LoJack for Laptops, have been available for a long time. Typically they also offer a remote wiping function, which would seem to be a major advantage, at least for businesses.

It's not clear whether the location tracking information in the commercial products is any different from this free version. The ultimate version would use GPS hardware, but this is not typically included in notebook computers. Perhaps it should be (Yahoo! News)

Toshiba Unveils Laptop With Cell-Derived Chip

The first laptops to make use of the SpursEngine, a multimedia co-processor derived from the Cell chip that powers the PlayStation 3, will go on sale in Japan in July.

Toshiba will launch its Qosmio G50 and F40 machines with the chip, which contains four of the "Synergistic Processing Elements" from the Cell Broadband Engine processor. The Cell chip used in the PlayStation 3 has eight of the SPE cores plus a Power PC main processor. The SPE cores perform the heavy number-crunching that makes the console's graphics so stunning.

The SpursEngine SE1000 will work in much the same way in the laptops.

The operating system will run on an Intel Core 2 Duo chip and the SpursEngine will be called on to handle processor-intensive tasks, such as processing of high-definition video. This arrangement means the laptop should be capable of some tricks that haven't been seen on machines until now.

Among them, Toshiba said the two computers will be able to upscale standard-definition video to high definition; transcode in realtime digital TV to MPEG4 so that the resulting files are cut down in size by one-eighth and burn video to DVD in half the time of current machines.

A novel feature is face navigation. Faces that appear in video are recognized and displayed as thumbnail images to create a visual index to the video. Users can find the person or scene they want by glancing at the thumbnails and then click on the respective one to watch that portion of video. The computer can also divide up the scenes in user-shot video so they can be viewed one-by-one and analyze and display the volume or the clip across its entire length so, for example, excitement in a sports event can be more easily found.

Finally, by analyzing images from the computer's built-in camera it's possible to control video playback with hand gestures.

The Qosmio G50 is a multimedia laptop and has an 18.4-inch high-definition screen, 500G bytes of hard-disk space, NVidia GeForce 9600M graphics processor, dual digital TV tuners and wireless LAN including 802.11n. It weighs 4.9 kilograms and measures 45 centimeters by 31cms by 4.8cms. Battery life is about 4 hours.

The Qosmio G50 will be cost from ¥290,000 (US$2,700) and the F50, which has a 15-inch screen and 250G byte hard-disk drive, from ¥250,000. Toshiba plans to put the machines on sale overseas but has yet to announce launch details.

Intel's 4-series chipsets support overclocking

One of the main features of the recently released Intel 4 series chip set is that it will allow its users to better overclock their systems. Apparently, Intel will now give its users the necessary tools that will enable them to improve their system's overall performance, by tweaking and overclocking the central processing unit. Still, one thing that users shouldn't expect from Intel is to provide warranty support if something
goes wrong.

According to Intel's vice president and general manager of the graphics development group, Eric Mentzer, in an interview held at the Computex show, the new chipset series is going to have overclocking capabilities as a main feature. By the looks of things, Intel is trying to provide overclocking enthusiasts with a better computing platform and, at the same time, leaving everyone responsible for their own actions.

"We spend a lot of time working with our motherboard partners to figure out all the hidden bits inside, helping them figure out how to bring the best out of these platforms," Mentzer said.

Apparently, Intel is trying to change the way its users interact with its products. In the past, Intel CPUs have been specifically locked down by the company, thus preventing any overclocking attempt. By allowing users to freely overclock their system, Intel is actually changing the way they perceive the overclocking community.

"There's a very small segment that just love to play with this stuff," Mentzer said. "They're very important to us because they are also the people who set the tone for what they think is a good chip set." he added.

Unfortunately, Intel will not offer warranty for the processors that will go through an overclocking process. They will only guarantee for the fact that their processors run smoothly under the right circumstances.

"When we do that, inherently there's a lot of margin. We know you can overclock and deliver greater performance, because effectively you're tapping into the margins we've designed into the product... But, of course, we can't stand by that because we'd have to test to that" level of performance, Mentzer explained.

Asus's Eee Box System Gets Details and Price

A few days ago, there wasn't much to say about the Asus Eee PC Box desktop, apart from the fact that it resembled a Nintendo Wii, and to speculate on whether it would be featured with an Intel Atom processor or not. All these speculations seem to have come to an end, as Asus has just revealed the final specifications for its future Eee Box desktop
systems.

Up until now, all reports on Asus' Eee Box were based only on speculations, mainly surrounding the fact that it would come with an Intel Atom processor. It appears that some of the suppositions are bound to come true as the official version (according to Hot Hardware) is going to come with a 1.6 Intel Atom processor, dubbed N270. The small system is going to run a Linux operating system, but the hardware is also going to be capable of running a Windows XP.

The desktop Eee PC will ship with a maximum of 2 GB of DDR2 memory, but various models include a 512 MB and 1 GB versions. Based on an Intel 945GSE and ICH7M chipset, the Eee PC desktop PC is going to provide its users with a maximum storage capacity of 250GB. With the on-board Intel GMA 950 graphics, the system will provide a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200.

The system comes with a number of connectivity features that compensate for the fact that it doesn't support an optical drive. There are no less than 4 USB ports and also a card reader, which should allow users to extend the basic storage capacity. The highest priced model ($300) includes 2 GB of DDR2 memory, a 160GB hard drive and a Linux operating system.

The new product is expected to be available on the US market in mid-July.

Asus Eee PC 900 UMPC: launch dates and details

The original Asus Eee PC was a great little UMPC, however many of us knew that this was just a teaser until the launch of the Asus Eee PC 900. We thought that this slighter larger model would be a huge improvement on the previous model however, I was a little shocked to learn that they would still be using the 900MHz Celeron M processor.

Although Asus have tried to make up for this by giving us two different flash storage units, the first is 4GB of flash storage that is soldered on the motherboard while the other is the 8GB SSD which will be in the PCIe slot however, this is only on the XP version of the Ultra Mobile PC, and on the Linux version that will come with a 16GB SSD.

One thing that I do not understand, why would Asus give the more simpler Linux operating system more storage, very strange. The price for the Asus Eee PC 900 UMPC will be $500 - $650, the reason for this high price tag has something to do with the Windows license fee.

So now comes the all important launch dates of this Ultra Mobile PC, well both the UK and Honk Kong should see ship dates from today with France following tomorrow. Germany, Italy and Australia will have to wait until May. As yet there is no news as to when the Asus Eee PC 900 UMPC will be released in the U.S.
