Subpar Screen Quality

A fresh new phone shouldn't have a jaundiced screen. But proud new iPhone owners have taken to the Apple forums to complain about less-than-bright screens. "Got a new iPhone 4S this morning, and when I put it next to my old iPhone 4 I discovered the screen was much 'nicer' on the old iPhone," writes Snowglider on the forum. "When I say nicer, its kind of got a really yellow tint to the screen on the 4S, whites are where you notice it the most for example the email looks far nicer on the iPhone 4 screen. All other colours look quite washed out," he continues.

Siri Doesn't Always Work

Siri is the most entertaining feature, but it sometimes has trouble connecting. "Siri is not working at all on my Sprint 32GB Black iPhone 4S," writes Gregory 813 on the Apple Support Communities forum. "Keeps saying 'Sorry Something's gone wrong. Can you try that again?' or 'Uh oh, there's a problem. Can you try again?'" Siri has a popularity issue, speculates another forum writer. "I am going to bet that the servers that handle the dictation and Siri backend are overloaded and they are racing to implement failover servers for all of the unexpected traffic," suggests J. Morris. In any case, it looks like the fix is a classic: The old turn-it-off-and-then-on trick. Turning Siri off, resetting network settings, and turning her back on seems to work, discovered Business Insider's Ellis Hamburger.

Sprint Is Slow

Android Phone Hacking Scare Alert

A flaw on a number of HTC smartphones available in Australia means a hacker can find out where you are, who you have called and sent text messages to and disable your phone remotely, security experts say.

To be exploited the flaw requires a rogue app to be granted access to the internet, which most apps require. Once granted access the app can then gain access to data that has been shown to be exposed.

Fairfax Media reported in May on a 400 per cent increase in malware since the middle of last year on Google Android, the mobile operating system installed on the HTC smartphones affected. Google regularly sweeps clean its Marketplace of malicious apps but doesn't always find the bad ones.

An Australian security expert has labelled the reported security flaw in HTC Android smartphones as "far more serious" than Apple's iPhone location tracking scandal and Facebook's tracking of users across the web.

Data exposed includes not only the phone's last known network and GPS locations and a limited previous history of locations (as was seen in the Apple iPhone location tracking scandal) but SMS and phone number data too, as well as a phone's list of user accounts, including email addresses and sync status for each.

Kindle Versus iPad

Kindle has become one hot brand in Amazon! Amazon has unveiled a touchscreen tablet com-puter in an attempt to pull the rug from beneath Apple and its iPad. The Kindle Fire, which has many similar functions, will be sold in the U.S. for $199 (£128), less than half the price of the cheapest iPad available.

The low cost stunned technology industry watchers, who suggested that Apple and other tablet manufacturers would have to cut their prices. Users will be able to access more than 18million movies, television programmes, songs, apps, games, books and magazines via the Amazon website.

The device has a seven-inch screen, compared with the iPad 2’s 9.7-inch display. And unlike the iPad, it will not have a camera or be able to make video calls.

Unveiling the tablet in New York, Amazon’s chief executive, Jeff Bezos, said: ‘Kindle Fire brings together all of the things we’ve been working on at Amazon for over 15 years into a single, fully-integrated service for customers.

‘These are premium products at non-premium prices. We are going to sell millions of these.’

The Kindle Fire will be available in the U.S. from November 15.

Although no date has been set for it to go on sale here, Britain will be getting the latest version of the basic Kindle, which is thinner and lighter than existing eReaders. It will cost £89 – but even this is a mark-up of almost 80 per cent compared to the U.S. There, the new version will cost $79 – about £50.

A company spokesman defended the pricing, saying that the new basic Kindle was the ‘most affordable’ ever. She added: ‘Operating costs differ by country, but as with all products on Amazon, we work hard to offer customers the lowest possible prices.’

But Professor Ajay Bhalla, a technology expert from Cass Business School in London, said: ‘Amazon has not got the pricing right. Consumers are smart and there is plenty of choice in this market.’ He doubted the Kindle Fire would pose a meaningful challenge to the iPad because of the absence of a camera.

Apple, Samsung Smartphones Outdo Nokia in 2Q

Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. zoomed to the top of the list of global smartphone makers in the second quarter, blowing past Nokia Corp. and BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd., according to research firm IDC.

Korea's Samsung made the biggest jump, from No. 4 in the first quarter to No. 2 in the second, on the strength of its Galaxy phones, which run Google Inc.'s Android software. It sold 17.3 million smartphones in the second quarter, up from 10.8 million in the first, IDC said.

Apple rose to No. 1, taking the spot from Nokia, by selling 20.3 million iPhones, up from 18.7 million in the first quarter. That relegated Finland's Nokia, the long-time leader, to third place. Apple has yet to top Nokia's high-water mark of 28.1 million phones in a quarter.

"But given Apple's momentum in the smartphone market, it may not be a question of whether Apple will beat that milestone, but when," IDC said.

Remarkably, Apple's sales record comes nearly a year after it released its latest model, the iPhone 4, and it's still selling millions of the even older iPhone 3GS. Competitors such as Samsung put out new models every few months.

New Wii Uses iPad-style Tablet

Nintendo's successor to its hugely popular Wii console uses an iPad-style tablet that can be played standalone or in conjunction with a television. The Wii U (pronounced We You) will be released next year and features a 6.2-inch (15.7cm) screen and support for high-definition televisions.

The system enables users to keep playing even if someone else wants to use the television screen. The Wii U can utilise existing controllers like the Wii Remote and Wii Fit Balance Board and is backward compatible with Wii software.

Nintendo unveiled the Wii U today at its Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. System pricing or a specific release date were not revealed.

In addition to its touch-screen, the controller has elements found on more traditional gaming controllers such as twin analog sticks, two sets of rear shoulder buttons, rumble functionality, and a gyroscope for motion control.

The device also features a microphone, speakers and front-facing camera for video chat, which Nintendo says can be performed while watching television. Software showed the screen being used to complement action on the television.

Demonstrations showed players trying to catch a baseball by moving the tablet around in front of the television, and putting it between their feet to show a golf ball while swinging the Wii Remote as a club.

Nintendo Recruits James Bond

Nintendo has turned to James Bond and Mickey Mouse to help keep videogame players enchanted with the Wii as rival consoles debut motion-sensing controls. “Bond is back,” Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said during a press conference on the opening day of the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles.

Activision is reviving a long dormant franchise with “GoldenEye 007” videogame for Wii consoles based on the film by the same name. Players will get the chance to “use the lethal, gritty style of Daniel Craig’s James Bond to outwit, outmaneuver and overtake an arms syndicate that threatens the world,” Activision promised.

The game will also feature classic Bond movie characters, according to Fils-Aime. A “Disneyontrol Xbox 360 games with body gestures alone. Sony is demonstrating Move, which allows motion-control of games on PlayStation 3 consoles. Kinect and Move are scheduled to hit the market in time for the year-end holiday shopping season.

10 – 16 May : A Gamer's Week

Hello and welcome to another edition of A Gamer's Week, your own roundup of the most important news in gaming from the last week. We've seen some very interesting turns of events these past 7 days, which have been filled with teasers and announcements from various big corporations, all ending with the monthly NPD hardware and software charts detailing how consoles and video games sold in April. Without further ado, here's this edition of A Gamer's Week.

Monday saw some much-needed news for Duke Nukem fans around the world, as we were able to post artwork, screenshots and a video from Duke Nukem Forever, a project that has been placed on permanent hiatus because its developer, 3D Realms, has closed down. This day also saw big news for the thousands of Pokemon fans around the world, as the Game Boy Advance titles Silver and Gold will be getting a remake, which is due to arrive this fall from Nintendo.

Sticking with Nintendo, Tuesday saw the chart made by the Reputation Institute of the most respected companies worldwide. The Japanese company, which holds the rights to popular IPs such as Mario, Zelda or Metroid, has beaten all of its competitors, including Sony, Microsoft or Apple, in terms of reputation and popularity. This day also saw Chris Morgan, the screenwriter of the Gears of War movie, express his opinion on who should play the lead role of Marcus Fenix, as he thought that former wrestler-turned-actor The Rock should play the burly space marine.

Wednesday was very important for Call of Duty fans, since details about Modern Warfare 2 were leaked by Game Informer subscribers, namely the fact that it wouldn't feature a single-player cooperative play but that it would, once again, place you against Russian terrorists, a few years after the events in the first game. This day also saw the announcement of an announcement, as Harmonix revealed that a partial tracklist for the upcoming Beatles: Rock Band title would be unveiled at E3. Until then though, we still have to wait.

Sticking with companies that make gamers wait, Blizzard revealed on Thursday that the online project that it currently has underway would be based on a completely new IP, thus blowing the dreams of fans of a World of StarCraft or any such thing. Square Enix then took the stage to reveal that, due to the size differences between Blu-ray and normal DVD discs, it would certainly have to cut a few things from the Xbox 360 version of the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII game. As of yet, the Japanese voices might be the first ones to go.

The last day of the working week saw some light shed on the NFS World Online title, which, according to producer of the NFS Shift game, will appear at the end of the year for North American gamers while Europeans will get their free-to-play racing title next year. More important, this was also the day when the NPD group revealed the figures it had gathered in the month of April in both hardware and console sales. While in terms of video games Nintendo reigns supreme, holding the first four places in its iron casual grip, in terms of hardware the DS has seen a record month, selling over 1 million units and leaving the Wii behind. Also noteworthy is the performance of the old PlayStation 2, which managed to outsell the PS3, thanks to the recent price cut.

Glu Mobile has announced a new game for iPhone and iPod touch called Cops & Robbers. Immediately available for download via the iTunes App Store, the title is a Glu-original, promising to offer a rush of adrenaline as players take the role of a thief escaping pursuers, or the cop chasing down a criminal on the run.

The Dark Knight Mobile Game Is Here

With only a few days before The Dark Knight film makes its debut in the US, Glu Mobile has released a mobile game with the same title. Developed following a licensing agreement with Warner Bros. (the film's distributor), the Dark Knight mobile game is now available in the States and can be acquired from Glu's website.

Glu's new game will allow you to become a mini Batman who fights crime on the streets of Gotham City. Stealth tactics, special weapons (Batarangs included) and combat moves will be used on order to defeat The Joker himself, the most (in)famous criminal of Gotham.

Besides the new game, Glu will also offer The Dark Knight content suite, including 8 animated screensavers, 31 wallpapers, 4 music tones and 14 voicetones, all of which will bring fans closer to Batman and the other characters of the game/movie.

Talking about the Batman mobile game, Jill Braff, senior vice president, global publishing, Glu, said: "We take pride in making great games and are excited to have worked with Warner Bros. to bring this landmark title to the mobile platform. The action-packed mobile game enables players to use dynamic moves and stealth tactics to take out one of the most notorious antagonists in the world – The Joker. Until the new Batman film gets to be released (July 18), the new game and the Nokia handset will be the only things to appease the dark adventure hunger that Batman's US fans might feel.

Sony PS3 Site Falls Victim to Hacker Attack

All gamers must be warned that trying to access the US Sony PlayStation web page poses a security threat. According to Sophos (company that specializes in offering anti-spam and antivirus software solutions) an SQL injection vulnerability was exploited by hackers in order to put their malicious code on the web page.
Sites for popular Sony games "God of War" and "SingStar Pop" have been infected.

This is what will happen if you visit the compromised site: the malware will inform you that a virus scan is required and after pretending to scan for a while, it tells you that all sorts of viruses and trojans have been detected. You are of course provided with a link to a pretend security solution. Sophos claims that this is not an attempt to enlarge a botnet, it is a simple scam that tries to get you to part with your money. Unwary PC users are scared into thinking that they are infected and then convinced to purchase a phony security program.

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant with Sophos comments: "There are millions of video game lovers around the world, many of whom will visit Sony's PlayStation website regularly to find out more about the latest console games. Most would never expect that surfing to a website like this could potentially infect them with malware. If users do not have sufficient protection in place then they might find that before they know it they have been scared into handing their credit card details over to a bunch of cybercriminals. It is essential that all websites, especially when they are high profile like this or receiving a large level of traffic, have been properly hardened to prevent hackers from injecting malicious code on to what should be legitimate web pages."

Sophos has already identified and classified this threat as Troj/frame-AG and Mal/Badsrc. If you are using Sophos security software, make sure you update and stay protected.
