Cat lovers join Yogya Cat Carnival

Around 80 cat lovers participated in a Cat Carnival to mark the first anniversary of Yogya Cat Carnival held at state University of Gajah Mada.

"In the province there are two cat lovers communities who are actively communicating through a twitter service. The number of their members reach 200 but only 80 participated in the carnival," event coordinator Darliana Surbakti said here on Saturday.

The Jogja Cat Carnival from March 19 to 20 was initiated by the Study Group on Pets of the Veterinary Department of the University of Gajahmada.

The activities in the carnival include cat contest, cat fashion show, eating and running competition, vaccination and a seminar on how to take care of cats and training them.

Various kinds of cats took part in the event such as Anggora, Persian, Scottish, Bengal, Sphinx and Maine Coon.

"Through the activity it is hoped cat lovers could exchange information as cat rearing has become a life style," he said.

The director of a veterinary hospital, Prof Soeparwi Ida Tjahajati said at the seminar that looking after and treating cats could not be done carelessly.

"They must pay attention to their food, vaccination and correct grooming," he said.

She said cat lovers also had better conduct consultations not only when their pet is ill but also when they are healthy.

Among the bacteria and virus that could attack cats include rabies, feline rhinotracheitis, feline panleukopenia, feline calicivirus.

"These diseases must be monitored and when they have attacked the cats must be immediately treated by vet," she said.

Pamela Anderson Too Sexy to be in Canada

Pamela Anderson flew into Montreal yesterday all set to unviel her new ad campaign for animal rights group, PETA. But the ex-Baywatch beauty learnt at the last minute that the required permit had been refused by local officials, who branded the ad 'sexist'.

The ad, which was due to be revealed outside of Montréal's Place Jaques-Cartier will now be unveiled at Restaurant Globe Thursday morning as part of a news conference for the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival which Anderson is hosting.

Canadian born Anderson was shocked by the ban decision, saying: 'In a city that is known for it's exotic dancing and for being progressive and edgy, how sad that a woman would be banned from using her own body in a political protest.

'In some parts of the world women are forced to cover their whole bodies with burqas- is that next? I didn't think Canada would be so puritanical.'

And PETA's senior Vice President, Dan Matthews weighed in: 'I think that city officials are looking at this lovely ad and confusing "sexy" with "sexist". In the ad Anderson's nearly naked body, clad in just a teeny tiny bikini, is covered in paint markings that mimic a butcher's diagram.

'The Cove' to screen in Japan despite protests

"The Cove," an Oscar-winning film about a dolphin-hunting village in Japan, will be shown in the country from next month, despite pressure from nationalist groups that caused several theaters to cancel screenings.

The domestic distributor, Unplugged, said Monday that six theaters around the country will start showing the movie July 3, with 16 more to show it later.

Initial screenings of the film at three other theaters were canceled early this month after protests by nationalist groups, who say the film is anti-Japanese, distorts the truth, and has deep connections with a militant anti-whaling organization.

The issue erupted into a broad debate on freedom of speech after those theaters pulled out to avoid disruptive protests on their doorsteps. National newspapers widely condemned the cancellations in editorials, and prominent film makers, journalists and lawyers publicly urged theaters not to back down.

Kangaroos Endangered by Global Warming

Global warming does not necessarily entail only more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, but also drastic increases in temperatures worldwide. Over the next 50 years or so, the temperature in Australia is predicted to rise by about 2 to 6 degrees Celsius. While this may not seem like much on paper, new ecological studies show that most kangaroo species are endangered by this future shift.

One of them in particular, the antilopine wallaroo, faces a 93 percent loss of habitat if the temperature goes up by only 2 degrees. Further increases could very well mean the extinction of this species, as it is accustomed to wet, tropical habitats, which are in danger of becoming arid pastures once the climate gets warmer. In fact, the threat that global warming poses is not directed on the animals themselves, but rather on their specific habitats.

Grazing field and water holes could be depleted by the slightest variance in the normal temperatures, and kangaroos will face a difficult challenge, in that they will have to relocate from their usual, familiar grounds to other territories. While they might find that easy to do, the plants and vegetation they are used to living around may not be so lucky. It takes many generations for a species to adapt to change, but the necessary condition for the adaptation to occur is that at least some animals from that species are left.

Naturalists observing the behavior of the kangaroos over the last three years say that their ranges have already begun decreasing at an alarming rate. They argued that, in 20 to 30 years, all kangaroo habitats could be reduced by as much as 30 to 40 percent, regardless of their species. This is just an average estimate that doesn't take into account other factors that might threaten the animals, such as road accidents, hunting and meat consumption by the indigenous populations.

Experts say that understanding the key environmental connections between kangaroos, vegetation and humans is crucial to the creation of a long-term plan, aimed at reducing the potential impact that global warming could have on these creatures.

Nicaraguans celebrate mass for dogs, pray for cures

MASAYA, Nicaragua - Hundreds of dogs, many dressed as babies or clowns, were taken to celebrate mass in this Nicaraguan town on Sunday, an annual ritual where the owners pray for their pets to be cured or avoid falling ill.

A long queue of Catholics, carrying their pets or leading them on leashes, waited their turn to pass by an image of a saint in a tiny church in this town 20 miles to the south of the Nicaragua capital, Managua.

The faithful thank the saint for curing their pets or ask for the dogs to be protected from illness. The town's priest always conducts a special canine mass.

"We brought him so he does not get sick," said local resident Nora Espinosa, talking about her six-month-old Basset Hound, dressed in a soccer outfit.

Locals say the tradition goes back to the colonial period after the Spanish conquest.
